In a milestone for India's rare disease community, the Government of Andhra Pradesh has begun formal consultations on a dedicated state policy for rare diseases. The Directorate of Medical Education hosted a first-of-its-kind stakeholder conference at Dr. NTR University of Health Sciences in Vijayawada, drawing together government officials, clinicians, researchers, and patient organizations to shape the draft policy.
State Health Minister Satya Kumar Yadav joined virtually to reaffirm the government's commitment to ensuring no rare disease patient is denied timely treatment or financial support. Prof. Ramaiah Muthyala, President and CEO of the Indian Organisation for Rare Diseases (IORD), called the gathering a historic and emotional milestone, noting Andhra Pradesh is the first state in India to publicly launch this kind of structured policy dialogue. He traced the journey back to IORD's founding in 2005 and its long-standing engagement with the state since 2016.
Other speakers, including Principal Secretary S. Suresh Kumar and ARDO founder Sobha Rani Sunkara, highlighted the need for better training among frontline health workers, earlier diagnosis, and stronger collaboration across government, industry, and patient groups.
